Dismal California Prisons

During the first meeting of the 2004 course I asked students to design a facility for

18-25 year old Americans. One group was asked to plan a new college dorm, the

other to sketch a prison. Both groups specified, to their own liking, the

basic principles that informed their proposals. This story from the New York

Times describes what the equivalent of an $80,000 per year tuition buys

young offenders in California.
